2. Selecting a QENTA solution

One of the most important issues when establishing your online shop and setting up a checkout solution is deciding on the QENTA solution that best suits your business requirements and scenarios.

In this chapter we intend to give you an overview of the different solutions we offer and make you acquainted with their most essential features:

For the sake of completeness, it is mentioned that our QPC Payment Center is an integral part of all our QENTA solutions.

Please keep in mind that enhanced usability of the implemented solution also implies a higher integration effort, and thus a more intense occupation with PCI DSS related issues.

QPAY Checkout Page

QPAY Checkout Page is the perfect choice when it comes to minimum integration effort and extensive support of all popular payment methods while at the same time covering many business needs. During the checkout process in your online shop, your consumers are directed to a page hosted by QENTA to complete the checkout process. If the default design and layout of QPAY Checkout Page do not fit the design and layout of your online shop, you may modify the design respectively. This is done by customizing some template files in HTML and style sheets in CSS.

The actual payment process, i.e. when your consumer enters the payment details, is always the last step of the entire checkout procedure. After a consumer has successfully completed a payment in your online shop, this payment - depending on the payment method and the configuration settings made by our support teams - is only approved (authorized) and not yet deposited (captured).

In order to receive the funds from your financial service provider, a day-end closing has to be performed of all deposited payments. To prevent the expiration of uncaptured payments you have the possibility to use an automated deposit and day-end closing which is offered as an optional feature of QPAY Checkout Page and QMORE Checkout Seamless.

Please have a look at QPAY Checkout Page for more information and details.

QMORE Checkout Seamless

When using QMORE Checkout Seamless, as compared to QPAY Checkout Page, your consumer stays in your online shop when completing the checkout process and, depending on the selected payment method, enters the relevant payment data in HTML forms in your online shop.

The actual payment process, i.e. when your consumer enters the payment details, must not necessarily be the last step in the checkout process since you may freely decide at which point during the checkout process your consumer is prompted to enter the relevant payment data.

To prevent the expiration of uncaptured payments you have the possibility to use an automated deposit and day-end closing which is offered as an optional feature of QMORE Checkout Seamless and QPAY Checkout Page.

Furthermore, you have the opportunity to include certain intermediate steps before the purchase is completed. These include the displaying of order overviews, additional consumer-tailored information on discounts and special offers, as well as promotions which are perfectly catered to your consumers' interests and shopping preferences. This way, your consumer is very likely to add further items to the shopping cart which is an effective method of increasing your sales.

This customized handling of the entire checkout process boosts the cross selling and upselling potential of your online shop and is the most outstanding feature of QMORE Checkout Seamless. Your consumers enjoy additional benefits, highest levels of satisfaction and approval which at the same time significantly enhances the conversion rate of your online shop.

Please find more details at QMORE Checkout Seamless.

Overview - checkout process in QPAY Checkout Page and QMORE Checkout Seamless

The following flow chart outlines the most important steps of a checkout process in an online shop using QPAY Checkout Page or QMORE Checkout Seamless and also includes the embedded payment process which is described in step 3.

image

  1. First, the consumer opens the shopping cart which contains the previously selected items.

  2. Then he enters his personal data and the shipping address into the provided input fields of a form.

  3. Next, the consumer selects one of the available payment methods, enters the required payment method specific data, confirms and commits the payment.

  4. Then the consumer receives information on the result of the payment (see payment process details below). After returning to the online shop, the consumer proceeds with browsing or shopping additional items in the shop which are added to a new shopping basket.

Overview of responsibilites in checkout process

The following charts shall help you to understand which steps in the checkout process are realized by the merchant and which steps are handled by QENTA.

QPAY Checkout Page

The selection of payment methods is done by the merchant or by QENTA when using payment method SELECT, i.e the consumer may select one of the activated payment methods directly within QPAY Checkout Page.

image

QMORE Checkout Seamless

When using QMORE Checkout Seamless, the entry of sensitive payment data is typically carried out in HTML forms provided by the merchant; the data are then directly transferred to QENTA to be stored in a secure manner. However, when using QENTA’s “PCI DSS SAQ A Compliance”-feature, the consumer enters credit card relevant data directly in a web form hosted by QENTA and is then redirected to your online shop.

Please check QPC Payment Center for more information and details.

3. Using demos prior to integration or installation

Before choosing a QENTA Payment CEE solution you may want to have a look at our product demos which are available for

We provide specific demo data such as credit card numbers, bank sorting codes, etc. which you may use for demo transactions based on different payment methods.

4. Deciding on shop system

After you have gained the first insight and perhaps pre-selected a QENTA solution that best suits your requirements, you need to decide which shop system to use for your online shop.

Criteria for shop system selection

The following criteria are intended as a guideline to determine which shop system to use for your online shop:

  • What is the current business size?

  • What is the intended future business size?

  • What is your product portfolio for e-commerce?

  • Is online marketing used already?

  • Is there a Content Management System which needs to be integrated?

  • How are different departments such as sales, marketing, and IT going to be integrated?

  • What kind of tools and technologies are already being used and need to be taken into account?

  • Commercial shop system or free-of-charge shop system?

  • Does the preferred online shop provide sufficient scalability?

  • Do you have a server of your own or to you need a hosted server?

  • Do you need reporting and evaluation tools to handle your product and customer data?

  • What administration features such as data import, update/upgrade processes and automated accounting are supported by the online shop?

Integration into shop systems

Once you have decided on a shop system, you may integrate one of our solutions via a shop plugin. Optionally you may want to acquire a shop system with an existing QENTA integration, i.e. a shop system with pre-integration. If you decide to create your own shop system, a direct integration of one of our solutions is required.

Integration via shop plugin

QENTA Payment CEE offers free open source shop plugins for many popular shop systems which serve as technical connection between your shop system and QPAY Checkout Page or QMORE Checkout Seamless. For the installation of a shop plugin, little or no programming work is usually required on your part. All you need to do is download the respective shop plugin, install it to your online shop onto your server, and configure it to your needs.

QENTA Payment CEE constantly seeks to update and improve the shop plugins to be compatible with the current version of the relevant shop systems.

Each shop plugin supports a certain number of payment methods. Please be aware that some payment methods need additional parameters and actions to be carried out before using them within the plugin.

For more information visit Integration via plugins.

Shop systems with pre-integration

When you do not have a server of your own to run your online shop, you may use a shop system with an existing QENTA Payment CEE integration. Please note that further software developments and services of the integration are carried out by the shop system manufacturers and that the functions can not be verified by QENTA Payment CEE.

For more information and details visit Shop systems with pre-integration.

Direct integration

When you decide to create your shop system yourself or if no shop plugin is available for your specific shop system, a direct integration of QPAY Checkout Page or QMORE Checkout Seamless is possible, which of course, needs some programming work on your part.

The respective integration requirements and steps are described in QPAY Checkout Page and QMORE Checkout Seamless.

Integration scenarios

There are three different integration scenarios you might come across:

1. You already have a shop system and QENTA Payment CEE offers the relevant shop plugin

  • Installation of relevant shop plugin for QPAY Checkout Page or QMORE Checkout Seamless to your online shop onto your server.

2. You already have a shop system but QENTA Payment CEE does not offer any shop plugin for your shop system

  • Contact our support teams to inquire about the availability of a plugin since a new plugin might currently be under development.

3. You do not have a shop system and you need technical support

5. Clarifying PCI DSS issues

The Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard (DSS) is a set of rules and guidelines aimed at ensuring a secure handling of sensitive payment data during online transactions.

With QENTA as PCI DSS compliant third-party payment processor, it is easier for you to comply with the relevant SAQ, SAQ A or SAQ A-EP, requested by your acquirer since no additional PCI-compliance for your online shop is required.

For more information and details on PCI DSS related issues, implications on your online business and applicable PCI DSS SAQs, we invite you to have a look at Securing your online shop.

6. Considerations on back-end operations and payment methods

Back-end operations allow you to use commands which enable various operations to be carried out regarding the orders of your consumers or the payment process itself. These operations are called by a server-to-server request from your web server to the QENTA Checkout Server. You may either call these operations automatically from the back-end of your online shop or manually from your user interface you have implemented for administration purposes in your online shop, or carry out these operations using the QPC Payment Center.

Back-end operations for QPAY Checkout Page and QMORE Checkout Seamless are subdivided into two categories:

  • Transaction-based operations*
Transaction-based operations depend on existing orders, i.e. orders which have been completed by the consumers in your online shop and which are at your disposal for further actions.

Non-transaction-based operations
Non-transaction-based operations do not depend on existing orders. I.e. such operations are carried out independently of any existing orders.

As the availability of each back-end operation is, amongst other factors, dependant on the payment methods offered in your online shop, we recommend to first reflect on the interaction of these two factors - back-end operation and payment method. If you for instance handle subscriptions or membership fees, you might be interested in billing a fixed amount of money on a regular basis. Such back-end operations are called recurring payments and are basically supported by payment methods like credit card, PayPal, or SEPA Direct Debit.

For a basic summary of all our transaction-based back-end operations and the payment methods which support these operations visit Available operations per payment method.

Selecting payment methods for your online shop

Deciding on the adequate payment methods is a very important issue in the course of setting up an online shop since consumer acceptance and satisfaction as well as the conversion rate of your online shop are significantly influenced by the available payment methods. Studies[3] have shown that a very high percentage of consumers are very likely to cancel the checkout process if their preferred payment method is not offered by the online shop.

We recommend to place the relevant payment method icons right on your website - this is a very effective measure to increase your shop’s conversion rate. Information on the available payment methods is very important for your consumers. If the consumer is informed about the available payment methods too late, i.e. when starting the checkout process, consumers tend to cancel the whole process.

For further information and assistance please do not hesitate to contact our sales teams or support teams.

QENTA Payment CEE will gladly support you to enhance your online business and invites you to download the required payment method logos.

Selection criteria for offering the right payment method

When deciding upon the payment methods to be offered in your online shop, you should keep in mind the following considerations:

  • Which payment methods are preferred in your target countries?

  • Which payment methods are popular with your target consumers?

  • Which payment methods are popular with your target age group?

  • Which payment methods are best suited for the consumer devices used by your target consumers?

  • Which payment method is suitable to achieve high conversion rates?

  • Which payment methods are appropriate for your specific business model, e.g. retail or digital goods?

  • Do your preferred payment methods support the back-end operations you need?

  • What kind of products do you sell online? E.g. cards with 3-D Secure are advisable for digital goods.

  • Do you expect a high or low amount of fraudulent transactions?

Consumer preferences

As studies conducted in Germany show [4], preferences for certain payment methods differ by gender, age, high and low income earners, and level of experience with online shopping:

Criteria Preferences

Gender

Credit card and PayPal are preferred by men.

:::

Invoice is the most popular payment method amongst women.

Age

E-payment methods are preferred by consumers below 26 years of age.

:::

Credit cards are fairly widespread in the 26 to 55 age group.

:::

Invoice is perceived as most suitable payment method by consumers aged 55 and over.

High and low income

Credit card is preferred by target consumer segments with high income.

:::

Invoice and installment are selected as payment method mainly by low income earners.

Online shopping experience

PayPal is the preferred payment method for consumers who are experienced online shoppers.

:::

Invoice is used by consumers who are less familiar with online shopping.

Consumer preferences vs business model requirements

When it comes to deciding between the payment methods preferred by your consumers and the payment methods that best suit your business needs, some difficulties might arise in aligning the interests of the parties involved. E.g. while consumers prefer invoice, PayPal and SEPA Direct Debit as payment methods, your might prefer payment in advance because of the maximum protection against payment default, like eps Online-Überweisung, giropay and Sofort.

It is thus advisable to offer in your online shop a payment method mix which is aimed both at fulfilling your business model requirements and suiting the preferences of your target consumers. Online shops offer on average between five and seven different payment methods in order to meet their consumers' needs and to keep conversion rates high.

Please contact our sales teams for more information and expert advice on the best payment method mix suited for your requirements.

Payment methods - selection criteria

The following two tables shall provide you with a summary of different payment methods and their essential features as seen from a merchant’s and consumer’s perspective.

Merchant perspective

While credit cards rank as the most popular payment method for consumers in e-commerce, merchants favor credit cards which include the 3-D Secure feature because of the enhanced fraud prevention and liability shift reducing the risk for merchants regarding payment defaults. I.e. during the checkout process, the consumer first enters the credit card number. A connection is established to the card issuer and the consumer is prompted to enter the 3-D Secure code which is only known to him in order to prove that he is the authorized card holder. After successful authentication, the transaction is authorized.

This table provides you with the top features that merchants expect from a payment method and lists which payment methods fulfill the respective feature.

7. Integrating solution or installing shop plugin, using demo and test mode

This chapter provides you with information on the integration or installation of our solutions as well as on the various possibilities to apply our demo and test modes.

7.1 Integration or installation

To integrate or install your selected QENTA solution follow the steps described in our installation guides and user manuals:

For more information on shop systems with an existing QENTA Payment CEE integration we invite you to visit Shop systems with pre-integration.

7.2 Demo mode and test mode

In order to check your integration of QPAY Checkout Page or QMORE Checkout Seamless in your online shop we offer a demo mode and test mode.

Since in demo mode there is no communication with your financial service provider but only between your online shop and QPAY Checkout Page or QMORE Checkout Seamless, it is required that you have a connection to the Internet to gain access to QPAY Checkout Page or QMORE Checkout Seamless. The payment process is only simulated and no money is transferred. Also remember that your executed payments are not displayed in the QPC Payment Center.

Unlike demo mode, during test mode there is communication between your online shop and a test bank or demo bank provided for this purpose by the corresponding financial service provider. However, the payment process is only simulated and no money is transferred.

For further information as well as details on the available payment method specific demo data and test data we invite you to visit demo mode and test mode for QPAY Checkout Page and demo mode and test mode for QMORE Checkout Seamless.

8. Closing contracts

As a next step you need to close the necessary contracts with QENTA Payment CEE and your financial service providers in order to go live.

8.1. Contract with QENTA Payment CEE

From a technical point of view, every payment request needs to be processed by QENTA Payment CEE as your payment service provider for which you need to conclude a contract for the technical implementation of your desired solution, required payment methods, additional features and transaction packages which are specifically tailored to your business needs. Based on the details of your contract, our support team will then set up your merchant account configuration matched to your requirements.

For detailed information regarding the contractual terms, please contact our sales teams.

8.2. Contract with financial service provider

During the checkout process, QENTA Payment CEE transmits the relevant payment information to the respective financial service provider (FSP), the payment is approved or denied and corresponding information is sent back to QENTA Payment CEE. The processed amount is then transferred to your merchant account by the financial service provider.

Typical financial service providers are credit card companies, banks and banking systems. Their field of activities include accepting money transfer requests, approval or denial of transactions and processing of payments.

From a merchant’s perspective, an acceptance contract needs to be concluded with the relevant financial service provider for any payment method offered in the online shop, the so called processing model. An acceptance contract contains information on the account to which the financial service provider will transfer the processed amounts, rules and regulations as well as the payment details like time limits and disagios.

We also provide a collecting model for which only one contract needs to be concluded with QENTA Bank which acts as your acquirer and consolidates all payment flows to one bank account. I.e. this model allows you to collect payments from various payment methods to one single bank account.

Please visit collecting and processing models to obtain more information and details.

After having signed a contract with the financial service provider(s), you or the financial service provider need to forward to us the relevant contract details. Our support team then includes these details into your merchant account configuration and performs tests to verify the proper processing of payments. Only after the proper processing of payments is ensured, our support team forwards to you by fax or e-mail the respective data which are necessary for activation as well as a summary of all payment methods that will be enabled in your online shop.

The activation data include two important pieces of information:
- Data which you need to save in your integration in order to go "live". To switch from demo mode to live operation you need to remove the customerId, secret and possibly shopId which you used in demo mode and replace them with the corresponding activation data.

  1. Access data to the QPC Payment Center to view and manage all successful transactions.

Once these procedures have been performed, your consumers may successfully complete the checkout process in your online shop and, depending on the details of your acceptance contract, you will receive the corresponding funds from your financial service provider.

The following table shall provide an overview of financial service providers that work together with QENTA, relevant contact information and the payment methods they support:

9. Filling out relevant SAQ

To ensure the highest level of data security, your acquirer for credit card payments will request you to fill out a specific Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) prior to concluding an acceptance contract with you. The handling and management of sensitive payment data in online shops is always a crucial issue in fulfilling the relevant SAQs and obtaining PCI-compliance. However, there is no need for your online shop to handle or store sensitive data since all necessary financial and personal data required for the checkout process are handled by QENTA.

Also, when choosing QENTA as your PCI-compliant third-party payment processor, it becomes much easier for you to comply with the relevant SAQ requested by your acquirer and no additional PCI-compliance for your online shop is required.

There are various SAQ versions available for your acquirer to select from which best suit your business profile.

For more information and details on SAQs in general and applicable SAQs for different QENTA solutions, we invite you to have a look at Securing your online shop.
